Due to its high thermal conductivity and electrical insulation, sapphire is able to withstand the high temperatures and currents of the LED production process, while providing good optical transparency, so it is a key material in LED manufacturing.

In order to further increase the light output power and luminous efficiency of LEDs, patterned sapphire substrates are widely used. By growing GaN films on sapphire, high brightness and high efficiency LED devices can be fabricated.
